Funchal Cable Car & Monte Palace Gardens

This day we took the Funchal Cable Car, which starts by the ocean and ascends into the hills, ending nearby the Monte Palace Gardens.  The Monte Palace Gardens are a beautiful and peaceful place with scenic views looking down on the city of Funchal below in the distance.  

We had lunch near the cable car top, then explored the Monte Gardens and took a taxi back to Funchal Old Town.   Many people take the “toboggans” back down from the nearby the top of the cable car but we felt this was a bit too touristy and overpriced.  To each their own!
